What belongs on a freelance invoice
An invoice is a payment instruction, and most late payments start with one that was missing something. The list is short:
- Your details and theirs. Full legal name and address on both sides. If you are registered for tax, your tax number goes here too.
- A unique invoice number. Sequential is fine. It is what both of you will quote when something goes missing.
- Issue date and due date. Write an actual date, not “Net 14”. Removing the arithmetic removes an excuse.
- Line-by-line work. One line per deliverable with quantity and unit price. A single line reading “Design work” invites questions.
- Tax, clearly separated. Show the rate and the amount rather than folding it into the total.
- How to pay. Bank details, or a payment link. Put it in the notes. If paying requires an email asking how, it will take another week.
Getting paid on time
Invoice the day the work is delivered, not at month end. Set terms you actually intend to enforce. And follow up the moment an invoice goes past due — most late payments are not disputes, they are an invoice sitting unopened in an inbox.

- Is this invoice generator really free?
- Yes. There is no signup, no email wall and no watermark. It runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing for us to charge for and nothing for us to store.
- How do I save the invoice as a PDF?
- Click Print / Save as PDF. Your browser opens its print dialog, and every major browser offers "Save as PDF" as a destination there. On a phone, choose Share then Print.
- What has to be on a freelance invoice?
- Your name and address, the client name and address, a unique invoice number, the issue date, the due date, a line-by-line description of the work, the amount for each line, any tax, and the total. Add your payment details in the notes so the client does not have to ask.
- Do you store the details I type in?
- No. Nothing is uploaded. The invoice is assembled in the page and disappears when you close the tab, so keep the PDF once you have made it.
- Can I use this outside the US?
